Practice time is a prized commodity in our family, since both me and Robert are musicians. We try to make it as even as possible between the two of us and be creative about finding pockets of time throughout the week.
I practice 6 days of the week, and 4 of those are while I am also watching Cecil, who is 1.5. He is an amazingly calm and happy guy, so is often cool with me practicing, but on those days I will often have stop to get him some snacks, change a diaper, etc. So it is interrupted practice time, but better than nothing.
Before, I would have not even considered 15-20 minutes enough to practice, but if that’s all I’ve got that day, I’ll do it. This a pretty generous estimation because realistically I often end up spending some of that time in the morning making doctor appointments or other phone calls, sending emails, or cleaning up messes.
Here’s a typical week for me:
Monday
6:30 Wake up, get ready
7 Get the kids up and ready
7:30 Take Misao to school
8:15-30 Come home, do the breakfast dishes and pick up a bit
8:30-9:45 Practice with Cecil (1.25 hours)
10 Leave for work
10:30-2 Work at cafe
2:30-6:30/7 Teach (sometimes I get 30-60 minutes if I have a break)
7:30 Eat dinner, read books to Misao, clean up, etc.
Monday total: 1.25-2.25 hours
