Alyse Hokamp is a flutist and multi-faceted artist based in Denton, TX. She performs frequently as a flutist, singer, accordionist, and dancer, and recently made her musical theatre debut in Oklahoma! with Theatre Denton as Ellen/Dream Ballet dancer/Onstage accordion.
Her genre-breaking flute band, the Pan-Tones, performs at the major local festivals, including Denton’s Arts and Jazz Festival, Day of the Dead Festival, and Denton Holiday Tree Lighting. Additionally, they are active with the organization Texas Winds Musical Outreach in providing music for assisted living and senior centers in the DFW area.
In 2024, as an off shoot of the Pan-Tones, Alyse launched Satomi and the Sound, a Japanese music project, expressing her own musical and cultural heritage. Satomi has performed at the University of North Texas, the AAPI festival in Dallas, and Panda Fest in Dallas and Austin.
Alyse also performs as an orchestral player, chamber musician, and solo recitalist, and has appeared with The Dallas Opera, Allen Philharmonic Orchestra, Highland Park Chorale, Flower Mound Symphony Orchestra, and Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth.
She is passionate about creating resources for the flute community, with an emphasis on accessibility, honesty, and connection. These include original flute music and arrrangements, an online mock audition, and a free mentorship program. She also teaches flute, piano, and music theory lessons online and in her private studio in Denton, TX.
Since 2019, she has candidly shared her challenges and thoughts on the world of professional classical music on her blog. Her writing has been featured in The Flute View and on the Flute Center of New York blog.
She has taken 30 professional orchestra auditions since completing her Master’s degree in Flute Performance (University of North Texas, 2012), and has written extensively about her audition experiences, including costs, recordings, and lessons learned. Fortunately, her failure to win a position led her to seek out other creative performance opportunities.
An unexpected, but significant part of her career has been as a church organist and accompanist. Self-taught on organ and piano, she has played weekly for church services since 2013. She currently serves as the organist at Blue Mound United Methodist Church in Denton, TX.
Alyse is originally from Kailua, Hawai’i. Her major teachers and mentors are Catherine Ransom Karoly, Mary Karen Clardy, Sabrina Saiki-Mita, and Jean Harling.
She lives with her husband, guitarist Robert Hokamp, and their two children. In her free time, she takes ballet classes, reads, and attempts to stay on top of household chores.
