Through an unexpected series of events, I am starting my own private studio!
I am so excited to create my own curriculum! In January, we will be focusing on habits. What better time of year than the new year? Each week there will be an assignment and short discussion about habits.
Week 1
Assignment: Create a practice log, which we will use for the month. A simple sheet of paper is fine, or a calendar if you like. Write down the days and length of time practiced that week. *Often, simply by tracking practice time (like a budget or eating diary), habits improve.
Week 2
Discussion: What days/time of day did you practice and why? What did you like/not like to practice?
Assignment: Create a (realistic) practice goal (based on the previous week’s practice time). Choose the days and times you will practice. Place your practice log on the piano stand so you see it, or leave your flute/case out so it is easily visible. *By making the cue to practice obvious and having a plan of execution, it is easier to remember to practice.
Week 3
Discussion: Did you meet your goal? Why or why not? Set another goal and schedule.
Assignment: At your planned practice time, sit at the piano or take out your flute. See what happens when you just do that! Start your practice with your favorite thing to play. *Taking the first, simplest step toward practicing is the hardest, like putting on your shoes to go for a jog.
Week 4:
Discussion: What were the effects of practicing more? Was it hard?
Assignment: Continue the practice log, and add up how long you practiced this month!
For me personally, learning music was definitely fun at first, but it also became very deeply rewarding when I realized how it was a laboratory for learning all kinds of transferable skills. Many of us recognize that music teaches us lessons beyond music, but I want to bring it to the forefront of my teaching and introduce these important lessons to my students in a way that is age appropriate and engaging.
