Putting together this program is definitely one of my proudest accomplishments. It represents a shift in my thinking, and me discovering a new creative expression- in organizing musical events.
It is still amazing to me that I basically thought this program into existence, but the relationships I formed as a result are concrete and ongoing. I have met many of these flutists in person since starting this program- the flute world is a small world! I believe I have planted a seed in each individual of the importance and beauty of having a supportive community of flutists.
I have found repeatedly in my developing career that I relied on the support, advice, and empathy from my flute friends and mentors. I think the saying “it takes a village…” rings very true for artists.
We all must walk down our unique artistic path. It can be scary- there is risk and vulnerability in this lifestyle. Yet, no one can walk it for us. We must find courage within ourselves, and a healthy amount of love and support from others. The goal of the mentorship is establish positive, supportive relationships among a small group of flutists.
