Principal Flute Mock Audition 2022

Congratulations to the winner of this year’s mock audition, Joanna Lau!

There were fantastic performances from all of the participants. I understand (better than most) the amount of energy and courage it takes to follow through with an audition. I hope that this experience will give them all more confidence in preparing future auditions!

The preliminary round is conducted in two groups. The players not performing in the current group provide written feedback to their colleagues, which I feel is an excellent for both parties. The listeners pay more critical attention, and the performers receive lots of feedback on their performance.

Preliminary round (blind)

The preliminary round included the following excerpts:

  • Mozart, Concerto in G Major- exposition
  • Debussy, Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun- Opening and 2-3
  • Mendelssohn, Scherzo- 2 before P to end
  • Beethoven, Leonore Overture- Opening to m. 36
  • Saint-Saens, Voliere- complete

The final round was not blind, and Mark Sparks joined me in listening to the four finalists.

Final round (not blind)

The final round was selected by Mark, and included the following excerpts:

  • Mozart, Concerto in G Major- exposition
  • Bizet, Entr’acte
  • Hindemith, Symphonic Metamorphosis
  • Brahms, Symphony No. 4
  • Dvorak, Symphony No. 8

In addition to creating an affordable audition experience for flutists, there are some personal benefits for me in executing this event!

  1. I get the experience of sitting on the audition committee, something I have not had because I haven’t worked in an orchestra.
  2. I get to hear my teacher’s/mentor’s opinions on the performances, what they heard in the performances, and if we agree on the ranking of the players.
  3. I get to work with my teachers as colleagues, and provide them an opportunity to connect with young flutists and share their wisdom/experiences.
“Committee” meeting with Mark

This final meeting with Mark was the most valuable part of the experience for me. I got to hear him explain what he valued in the players, and the reasoning behind it.

I’m so happy to have completed another successful mock audition, and am looking forward to doing it again next year! 🙂
