Program
The music was inspired by my first professional orchestral experiences, and falling in love with opera this past year.
Charles Gounod- Concertino
Domenico Cimarosa- Concerto in G Major for 2 flutes
W. A. Mozart, arr. Alberto Vingiano- Two arias from Don Giovanni
Franz Schubert- Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (Shepherd on the Rock)- HI performance only
Gaetano Donizetti- Sonata
Georges Bizet, arr. François Borne- Carmen Fantasie Brillante
A few thoughts…
The other exciting thing about this program is that I’m playing Gounod, Donizetti, and Bizet/Borne from memory. I’m trying to get more practice performing from memory.
I just play better when I’m playing from memory. Most likely because I’ve had to work harder and practice more to get it into my brain! I have a greater sense of freedom and expression, and a deeper relationship with the music.
It’s related in a way (opera -> Italian song -> Italian pop song), but I’ve also been working on a new arrangement for The Pan-Tones of “Ti Amo” by Umberto Tozzi. I was struck by curiosity about Italian pop music one morning, and ended up discovering this gem. It’s a slow, groovy 4 minute build up. I’ll bet you can sing the tune after one listen.
It was fun to transcribe/arrange this song for our group. I can’t wait to hear it at our first rehearsal!
