[video] Steve Reich- Vermont Counterpoint

Vermont Counterpoint

This was out of my comfort zone, and I don’t think I would have played it if Robert had not already known about the piece, purchased the score, and been available to record it for me!

Learning Vermont Counterpoint was an experience, though… a great challenge. Nothing really makes you question your musicianship like being unable to find the beat, even while staring at the score… repeatedly.

The crazy thing is that the way the music is written make parts of it sound like the piece is in a totally different meter- it pretty much stays in 3/4 the whole time, with a few measures changing meter only at the transitions between movements.

It felt like one of those optical illusions where you can see two pictures in one image. Once I figured out how the beats were organized, I felt like I had cracked a secret code.

Duck or rabbit?
