This is one of those pieces that I heard, but never learned in college. Probably for the best-I don’t think college Alyse could have managed the articulation in the last movement!
I started this duet in 2022, and finished the first two movements. Alas, I submitted to the charms of opera before I got to the last movement. There are a number of unfinished projects in my MuseScore folder for similar reasons…
When my head is in a piece of music, arranging is a natural extension of my study. But once I move on, it feels pretty daunting to find my way back in. Because of this, timeliness is critical for me to complete an arrangement.
Fortunately, I came back to this piece while looking for something to build my next recital program around. Rather than making arrangements of my repertoire after the performances (like I did last year), I figured it would be easier and more beneficial to do them before, while I am studying the music. Then I can really use them as learning and practice tools- as they are designed.
The CPE Bach Concerto translates really well to a flute duet, and is a lot of fun to play!

How I make a rep duet
y process with arranging duets has evolved since my first rep duet. I’m now able to do them more quickly, and with a better result.
This is not a linear process, and can vary depending on the nature of the music. Here’s an idea of what happens when I make an arrangement.
- Listen: Listen repeatedly, get the music in my head.
- Practice: Play the flute part with the recording. Play the accompaniment on the piano (at least parts of it).
- Notate: Input the flute part, and create a draft of the duet part.
- Test record: Record myself playing the parts. I listen to the midi playback while notating, but I often notice different things with “live” flutes.
- Edit: Check for awkwardness and errors, make adjustments. Make another test recording, and continue editing until I am happy with the result.
- Record: Make a promotional recording and/or video.
- Design: Make artwork for the product.
- Create product: Create the product on my website. Here I write a description, choose a price, include a preview, and upload the files.
- Share: Post on website, YouTube, Spotify, Instagram, Facebook, etc.
