Dialogues: Between classical and jazz is a reflection of my foray into jazz this past year. It’s particularly meaningful to me because Robert, trained as a jazz guitarist, and myself, trained as a classical flutist, have had countless such dialogues- in both words and music. Steven is one of the rare gems with a foot firmly in both worlds. The program features his composition, Billiana, inspired by and dedicated to the great jazz pianist Bill Evans.

Alyse Hokamp, flute

Alyse Hokamp is a flutist and multi-faceted artist based in Denton, TX. She can be found on a variety of stages playing the flute, singing, and dancing with her flute band the Pan-Tones. She also performs as an orchestral player, chamber musician, and solo recitalist, and has appeared with The Dallas Opera, Allen Philharmonic Orchestra, Highland Park Chorale, Flower Mound Symphony Orchestra, and Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth.
Alyse has created online events and resources for the flute community, with an emphasis on accessibility, honesty, and connection. These include flute duet arrangements of standard flute repertoire, an online mock audition, and a free mentorship program.
Since 2019, she has candidly shared her challenges and thoughts on the world of professional classical music on her blog. Her writing has been featured in The Flute View and on the Flute Center of New York blog.
Steven Harlos, piano

Steven Harlos (b. 1953) finds himself equally at home on the concert stage, in the jazz club, or in the pit of a Broadway musical. He performs regularly in a wide range of roles including concerto soloist, chamber musician, and in contemporary works involving electronics and improvisation. He has performed with such diverse artists as Timofei Dokschutzer, Harvey Phillips, Dick Hyman, Marvin Gaye and Maureen McGovern. In 2010, he presented the world premiere of Dysfunctional, a piano concerto written for him by American composer and jazz artist Stephen Anderson. 2021 marked the release of his recording of solo piano music by Dick Hyman. In 2022, he retired as staff keyboardist for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra after 26 seasons with the orchestra.
Currently, he serves as chair of the Division of Keyboard Studies at the University of North Texas. He is also a successful composer–his Sonata Rubata for flute and piano was published by Southern Music Company, and Benniana, his jazz sonata for clarinet and piano is gaining worldwide popularity. In 2021 he completed and premiered Billiana, Sonata #2 for clarinet and piano. Other works include Three Bach Inventions Re-Invented in the styles of Busoni, Godowsky, and Rachmaninoff for piano solo.
Robert Hokamp, guitar

Robert Hokamp’s career as a musician is marked by his explorations into contrasting genres. His production was described as “a pristine collection of music that perfectly showcases the true musical talent behind the spectacle” by the Dallas Observer.
He received the International Polka Association Young Songwriter’s Award for 2024 with his composition “To the Hills”. His interest in world and polka music led to projects with members of the 2-time Grammy winning polka band Brave Combo, which he joined as a full member in 2015. His arrangements of Little Rock Getaway/Cliffs of Dover and El Chupon highlight his guitar virtuosity in BC’s live shows, during which he also plays steel guitar, bass, and trumpet.
Along with his wife, flutist and arranger Alyse Hokamp, Robert arranges music for the Pan-Tones, “a musical playground that can bring to life their wildest ideas and far-flung interests”. Robert and Alyse also perform as a guitar/flute duo.
Robert writes and releases original songs in a variety of styles.
He composed the ringtone “Intelligent Data” (2019) for software company SAP.
As a jazz composer, he released Bees, and Jungle Team (both 2014).
He continues to enrich the Denton, TX music scene through his work as a producer with local bands.
Robert’s most recent musical projects are the winter season-themed Snø-Tønes and the eclectic and bluesy Hokamp, Beck, and Barnes.
