Mentorship #1

We wrapped up the first session of my mentorship!

I could not be more proud of these flutists and what they accomplished in these 8 weeks. It has been a pleasure to work with all of them.

AND it will continue to be a pleasure, because everyone agreed to continue meeting for the group class! I think that speaks to the power of building genuine, supportive relationships.

The other day, while I was sitting in LA traffic, I let a car merge in front of me. I’m a pretty laid back driver- I basically let everyone in because I feel like it’s safer that way. Anyway, since we were moving so slowly, I watched that car (now a few cars in front of me) and saw it let in two more cars in front of them.

It made me think about the power of generosity and kindness, and how it truly is contagious. I have confidence that each of these flutists will have a renewed feeling of respect and empathy for all other flutists in the future thanks to the experiences we had with each other.

My vision is to continue the mentorship several times a year, eventually creating many self-sustaining micro-communities where flutists support each other. Then those flutists go out and have a greater sense of compassion, and share it with others in our community.

We shall see how this thing evolves! I can’t say for sure, but I definitely feel like it is something I want to continue to grow. 🙂
