Teaching

I think a lot of parents have a vague sense that studying music is good for kids- we feel that it develops skills beyond academic demands of the classroom.

For me, those “other” skills are what has made my journey as a musician so deeply rewarding, and why I chose it as my career. Setting goals, building good habits, and overcoming challenges (in manageable steps) are some of the topics that we get to explore as musicians.

The best part about music is that the stakes are relatively low. It feels very scary to get in front of people and perform, but the reality is that the consequences of making a mistake are very small. For that reason, it is a great laboratory to take risks.

Each little risk we take builds our confidence, and eventually things that once seemed scary are no longer a big deal. We then have the confidence to face bigger challenges- not only in music, but in life.

The Practice Habit

The number one goal I have for all of my students is to build a strong, resilient habit of practicing. This means you play the instrument most days. It also means that when life inevitably chips away at practice time (it will), you return to it as soon possible.

The benefits of building a practice habit are huge, including:

  1. Learning to create and sustain good habits is a skill that enables you to learn and achieve anything you want in life.
  2. Practicing is not a result of loving music- it’s the opposite. Practice is what creates the connection to music.
  3. If the student eventually outgrows my instruction, they will have the good practice habit strongly established. Having that infrastructure in place is crucial to developing advanced musical skills.
