New World Symphony Audition

This audition was at the Colburn school in downtown LA, very convenient for me.

The rep I played was Mozart G exposition, Leonore overture opening, Brahms 4, and Firebird.

New World Symphony live audition

Thoughts:

Mozart: pretty strong, and since the audition wasn’t blind, I was able to see the panel grooving along which was cool.

Leonore: started too slow and ran out of breath. Next entrance was okay, I have worked a lot on getting the articulation right on the triplets. Definitely improved from when I played that excerpt for the Austin Symphony audition in August.

Leonore redo: pretty good, much easier to play a little faster. Still need to work on controlling the diminuendo.

Brahms: good. Could have pushed the dynamics a bit more on both ends of the spectrum.

Firebird: stronger sense of pulse and consistency of sound and technique. This one has come a long way but is still one that I definitely don’t feel solid on yet, and dread a little, hence the laugh. I played this last spring at the Santa Cruz Symphony audition and I suppose it was much better than that. That was before I started recording my auditions though, so I can’t go back and listen.

Tonight I have a lesson with Jim, so I’ll see what he has to say about my audition 🙂
