Description
Transposition is often an underdeveloped skill in flutists, who are accustomed to reading single lines of music in concert pitch.
By practicing transposition, we begin to feel the pull of tonality more acutely, and thus become able to phrase with more sensitivity. We become more fluent in reading different keys- simultaneously reading the notes and the structure of the music.
There are two ways to practice these exercises:
1. Practice every exercise in the same key.
2. Practice one exercise in every key. Move keys around the circle of fifths, or chromatically, for more of a challenge.
The exercises are organized in three sections of increasing difficulty. Begin with the first five notes of the diatonic scale, progress to an octave, and then beyond.
As the range increases, be sure to watch the contour of the line for the correct octave.
I indicated the exercises with scale degrees and staff lines to encourage you to think of the structure, rather than the notes.
